ABOUT ME
Michael Bruce is beginning his sixth year as a faculty member in the Telecommunication and Film Department at the University of Alabama. Professor Bruce teaches courses and supervises internships in the department’s newly created Broadcast Sports sequence. He conducts research on crisis/risk communication and Arab media. He is also actively involved in television production. His TideSports.com TV show won a 2016 BEA Best of Festival award. The short film Houndstooth: Tradition. Community. Loyalty. won a 2014 BEA Best of Festival award.

Prior to coming to Alabama, Bruce was an assistant professor and TV production manager at Oklahoma Baptist University. There he supervised and maintained the student broadcast facilities (overseeing a $25,000+ annual budget) and taught courses in beginning and advanced video production, sports media, advertising and organizational communication. Bruce also served as the executive producer for numerous award-winning student productions including live coverage of OBU sporting events on the Bison Sports Network.

Bruce’s professional experience includes various video/television production positions at television stations and in corporate communications. Bruce worked for five years as a writer/producer/director at the U.S. Postal Service’s National Center for Employee Development in Norman, Oklahoma. At NCED, Bruce was a part of the world’s largest distance learning network. He developed technical training programs for delivery over interactive broadcast networks and through innovative interactive multimedia platforms.
Since 2000, Bruce has also worked as a freelance producer/director/technical director for numerous sports productions, including the Sooner Sports Network, the Cowboy Sports Network, and the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. In 2009, Bruce was tapped by PMTV to produce/direct video board shows for Oklahoma State University football and basketball games.

Professor Bruce is actively involved in numerous professional organizations. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Broadcast Education Association. He was the founding chair of BEA’s Sports Division and served as the 2011 BEA Convention Program Chair. Bruce is also on the advisory board of the Sports Video Group’s annual College Sports Summit.

Professor Bruce completed his Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Oklahoma in 2012. He received an M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from OU in 1993. In 1989, he received a B.A. in Telecommunication from OBU, where he met his wife Teressa. They have two children, Kelsey and Eli, and a Weimaraner named Heidi.
