Houndstooth: Tradition. Community. Loyalty.

Description:

The project was one of seven finalists in the Hyundai Lens of Loyalty Film Competition. The task of the project was to illustrate a unique way that Crimson Tide fans demonstrate loyalty.  The competition began in early September with a treatment phase. I came up with the concept--Houndstooth--and wrote the treatment. Our treatment was one of seven finalists awarded a production grant to complete the film. We had from October 1 to November 15 to produce the film. During the production phase, I handled all of teh paperwork (which was extensive), wrote the final script, scouted locations, worked with the student director to organize and shoot scenes, arranged the narration and edited the audio, and supervised final editing. The project occupied most of my out-of-classroom time during the Fall 2013 semester. The film was available world-wide on the Hyundai Lens of Loyalty website during the 2013 college football bowl season. Since then, it has been available for streaming on the website for the Paul W. Bryant Museum.

Houndstooth is a symbol linked by tradition that unites University of Alabama fans in times of celebration and tragedy. The houndstooth tradition originated with legendary football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s houndstooth hat. What once symbolized the Bear’s leadership on the football field has become a unifying symbol of community and loyalty for the fans of UA. Houndstooth is basically an unofficial third color for fans of the university that serves as a reminder of what Bryant taught us: we all have the ability to be better everyday.
